Is It Time To Start The Flat Shoe Revolution?
Written by Rebecca | Published: 08-12-2011

One minute we're presented with news that women are, and always will be, addicted to high heels, then the next thing we hear, women are opting for the comfort of flats. So who's backing which craze; are we all for heels or flats? Many celebrities appear to be adopting the flat craze, and with cameramen poised ready to catch that ungraceful fall from high heels, who can blame them?

Regardless of who is wearing what, the question does still remain uncertain, flats or heels? This confusion probably isn't helped by the fact that there is no clear fashion must when it comes to the shoes you wear, heels suit certain outfits whilst flats can add a funky twist to others. However, there was one celebrity that really did break the mould when it comes to heels at the film première of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part One.

Kirsten Stewart who plays Bella Swan looked effortlessly glamorous in her Jimmy Choo's at the start of the night, but just halfway through the première's events, she was snapped wearing some Nike trainers, that certainly weren't been worn for the first time!

You may assume she was slated for this change in footwear, why would you ditch the Jimmy Choo's, but in truth many women have hailed her for her rebellious act. As many women have undoubtedly been in the same position as Stewart, she was hailed for her evident need for comfort.

OK, so this doesn't answer the flats or heels debate, and it is clear there isn't ever going to be either one or the other with the height of ones heels being a personal choice, but perhaps flats are becoming more acceptable for those who favour that style. The fashion world has opened it's arms to the flat shoe craze, with the 'masculine' trend being very predominant, particularly within brogue shoe styles, and one celebrity who has done their bit for these flat shoes is Alexa Chung.

At the recent British Fashion Awards, Chung was voted 'Style Icon' for the second consecutive year, showing her as a clear fashion ambassador and one that wears flats on numerous occasions. Other celebrities have also given in to the flat craze with Fearne Cotton, Pixie Lott and Gwen Stefani being just a few of the celebrities them that have given in to flatter styles including ballerina pumps and loafers.

Designers also appear to be taking note of this increase in demand for flat shoe styles, with Marc Jacobs and Paul Smith being just two of the designers who have introduced flat styles into their collections for Spring 2012. However, in true designer style they haven't let these flat shoes fade into the background, adding oversized details such as tassels and bold colours to the styles.
